do I want a plumber or a person for gutter repair?

Question by jleeds2: do I need to have a plumber or a person for gutter repair?
the downspout off the roof of our residence appears to be blocked right after it goes underground into a pipe under the residence. I am just curious whether I really should be calling a gutter repair man or a plumber? OR if you have any suggestions about how I might be able to find out if the pipe is blocked or cracked on my own that would be excellent too.

If it is underground, call a plumber. Then make sure your gutters have the proper gutter cages on them to prevent future blockages.

If you have a hand-snake, you might be able to clear the blockage on your own – the blockage is most likely in the trap appropriate at/close to the inlet. But if the program is not connected to the municipal sewer but is some sort of French Drain – it could be saturated and just not accepting water. Even so, if as you suggest it goes under the house it is really likely connected to the municipal sewer.

I would try and get a garden hose down in there, but use the skinny nozzle set on jet stream, turn it on low and work it down to the clog, then turn it on high full force and just make as big of mess as you can. The more it loosens up the closer you are to getting it clear. You might have some kids in the neighborhood that will help you. Give them some soda and a few dollars for helping you, You may need two hoses. If you know where it comes out the other end, then stick the hose up that way too. If worse comes to worse. Pour a half gallon of drain opener down the gutter. Make sure it’s not aluminum. drain cleaners are hard on that kinda metal.
