Ballarat ghost town, Panamint Valley. Just remnants of one particular of the buildings. There had been a half dozen ruins like this scattered about the ghost town.

Ballarat is 1 of the most remote ghost towns in one of the most remote corners of California. Settled among the salt flats of Panamint Valley to the west and the impassable mountains separating it from Death Valley to the east, Ballarat was founded in 1895 as a resupply camp for the rough-and-tumble mining camps in the nearby hills. But as the mines at Ratliff, Panamint and Pleasant Canyon played out, Ballarat slowly returned to dust. In the 1960′s a neighborhood businessman built a cinderblock building and set up an RV park with the hopes of turning the region into the next Palm Springs, but Ballarat’s extreme remoteness foiled any commercial prospects. The town has been home to numerous colorful desert rats, including Seldom Seen Slim and Charles Manson, but these days Ballarat is generally property to one particular or two permanent residents, tending the crumbling buildings that stay at the town center and supplying the off-roaders and explorers heading up into the mountains to the north and east. Ballarat is a single of California’s far more intriguing ghost town relics of the past, partly due to its extreme isolation and due to the fact it hasn’t been touched by commercialization but also for the colorful caretaker and historian that tends the town.

BACKSTORY: So our home owners insurance coverage (Farmers) got dropped due to getting peeling paint on our window sills (amongst other things). Weak. It was a LOT of work AND money for us to repaint all our sills. Wood windows SUCK!! Contemporary vinyl windows are MAINTANENCE-Totally free!! Wood windows… You gotta re-glaze the panes when they fall out, and then the wood itself is usually going to slowly rot away. We already had our cats knock a pane out, so we already had glazing compound for pane repairs. This came in handy when we painted our different window sills, as some also needed glazing compound.

So the largest window in our property — actually three windows — was a significant discomfort, and one of the handful of single-pane windows in the property. It would leak heat/cold in the summer/winter, and looked truly negative compared to the new siding we had installed 6 or so years ago. So we decided to go ahead and replace just this window (really three separate windows). Man was it pricey! ,350! Thompson Creek had the finest pitch and information, whereas Residence Depot required up front for an appointment they in no way showed up for and a list of four phone numbers to escalate (all four failed). So we had Thompson Creek do it of course! They did it, said they did it incorrect, produced us wait a month whilst generating a new window (pro: they are all custom-made just for you con: they are all custom-created, so a screw-up calls for waiting for a new one to be made), then installed the new window, and lastly every thing was great and we were happy.

It was just type of a discomfort because it cost so significantly cash and had our living room in disarray for so several months, and the complete insurance basis for the situation was pretty bullshitty in the very first place. We’re not going to make a property harm claim due to moisture that occurs due to the fact our paint was peeling! Ridiculous…
